Federal Officials Arrest 13 in Major Amarillo drug ring
The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force in conjunction with the DEA and FBI have arrested 13 individuals in Amarillo on conspiracy and drug trafficking charges.
Officials are calling the arrests a serious blow to the Gulf Cartel, a Mexican drug trafficking organization.
The following individuals were charged with with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. Omar “Big O” Mendoza, 36, Sammy “Hondu” Augustin Galan, 36, Miguel Carrasco, 33, Conrad “Chauncy” Nava, 36, Bobby “Holmes” Holman,37, Floyd Daniel Teafatiller, 32, Jessie Herrera Jr., 34, Joey Nicholas Vallejo, 35, Traci Michelle Ramos, 23, Curtis Gonzales, 35, and Shannon “Shawn” Drell Harris, 43.
Two other individual charged in this incident were already in state custody. They are Arcel “Chilango” Martinez, 40, and Thiraphong Vongphrachanh, 22.
Officials also indicated that two other individuals are also charged to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. Juan “J” Gabriel Mejia, 37, and Anthony “Tex” Rios, 36, were charged in the second indictment. Rios was arrested earlier this month and is also charged with three other meth offenses. His trial date is set for October 22, 2013. Mejia is a fugitive at this time, he is believed to be in Mexico.
During the 2 year investigation, authorities seized $500,000 in cash, six firearms, 1.75 pounds of methamphetamine and 2.25 kilograms of cocaine.
In a news release official said, “A federal indictment is an accusation by a grand jury and a defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty. If convicted however, the statutory penalties for the conspiracy and substantive drug counts range from 40 years to life in federal prison and millions of dollars in fines. The maximum statutory sentence for the firearms offense charged is life in federal prison.”
